    Responsibilities

    Medical coding is the revolution of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, etc. The diagnoses and procedure codes are taken from medical record documentation, such as transcription of physician's notes, laboratory and radiologic results, etc. Medical coding professionals assist to ensure the codes are applied correctly during the medical billing process, which includes abstracting the information from documentation, assigning the appropriate codes, and creating a claim to be paid by insurance carriers. The ideal candidate must be an experienced AHIMA Certified Professional Coder. Please note that this is not emergency department coding.

    •  Provide coding training and assistance to organization.
    • Identify, compile and code patient data, using ICD-10 and CPT and other standard classification coding systems.
    • Review data, such as history and extent of disease, diagnostic procedures and treatment for completeness, accuracy and compliance with regulations.
    • Performs necessary adjusting on accounts.
    • Cross trains within department to provide coverage when necessary.
    • Assists with special projects as needed.

    Qualifications

    • Must be an experienced AHIMA Certified Professional Coder
    • College degree from
      • An accredited nursing program,
      • CAHIIM accredited program, or
      • Other accredited healthcare program
    • Healthcare credential associated with their program of study
      • Other healthcare information related abstraction and coding credentials desirable

    Required

    • Requires at least three years’ experience in clinical coding classification systems, including International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revisions, Clinical Modifications (ICD-9-CM; ICD-10-CM); Current Procedural Terminology (CPT); and Healthcare Common Procedures Coding System (HCPCS) to support data analysis and validation activities.
    • Required to be certified by the American Healthcare Information Management Association (AHIMA) and experienced in conducting clinical data validation audits.
    • Include the amount of experience you have had relative to the responsibilities set forth in this job description.

     

     

    Preferred

    • Electronic Health Record experience
    • Preferred experience would include detox and rehab
    • Knowledge of computer hardware and software, including applications and programming
    • Must be reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfilling obligations
    • Minimum required outpatient coding experience with ICD-10
    • Fluent in CPT

    • Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment with varying priorities, based on a team building culture.
